Image description: Left image is me standing up with the words “This Would Make Me Human”. Right image is me sitting in my wheelchair with the words “Too Bad This Is The Only Way I Can Survive” while smaller words underneath say, “Guess I won’t be human after all.”
If you don’t know, I have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Since the pain is in my legs, it makes it excruciating to stand more than a few seconds at a time. I’m always in pain, but at least using a wheelchair means I can go about in the world. Well, anywhere that has wheelchair accessibility both physically and emotionally.
I had to quit my job the other day due to disability discrimination. I was not important enough to have accommodations throughout the store’s remodel and when they finally gave them to me, they took them away the next day and I was yelled at for making a fuss about it.
Had I been standing, had I been walking, had I been a normal, human being, this would never have happened. If I walked and stood without assistive devices, I’d be seen as human.
But since I don’t, and I can’t, it’s something I have to fight for.
I have to fight just for people to see me as someone who is worth living.
